Basin High School Students:

Welcome to the OIT Library.

The Library contains approximately 140,000 books and bound periodicals, and subscribes to over 1,200 periodicals. We have over 70 online databases as well as Federal and Oregon State documents. Please feel free to make full use of these resources while visiting our library.

Printing and Copying

Printing from our computers is available for 15 cents a page or you may elect to bring a floppy disk and download your information onto it. In addition, many of our databases allow you to email information to yourself.

We also have self-service photocopiers at 10 cents a copy cash or 7 cents a copy with the purchase of a photocopy card. Ask at the Circulation Desk for information on purchasing this card.

Interlibrary Loan

Occasionally, you will find that we do not own the book or magazine that you need. When this occurs, write down the full bibliographic citation (author, title, date of publication, journal issue number, and pagination) and request this material through your high school or your local public library.

Borrower's Card Application

In order to check out OIT LIbrary materials, you will need to apply for a Courtesy Borrower's Card. For this application, you need to bring in your high school identification card. You will also need to know your Social Security number, which serves as your OIT identification number. Your borrowing account at OIT will expire at the end of June.

Hours:

During Fall, Winter, and Spring terms, the library is open 7 days a week. During Summer terms and between terms, we are open fewer hours. Please check our webpage with a list of hours.

Loan periods:

In general, books go out for 4 weeks and periodicals go out for 3 days, both with renewals. See our loan periods.

Fines:

Books: 25 cents per day; maximum $10.00
Periodicals: $1 per day; maximum $10.00
Lost materials: Borrowers failing to return materials within 21 days of the due date will be charged the replacement cost of the items plus the amount of fine (not to exceed $10) incurred up to the time the item is reported missing. In addition, the borrower will be assessed a billing charge of $10. Return of material before a replacement has been ordered will enable a refund that will not exceed the replacement cost.

Shelving

Circulating books are shelved along the left side of the building, as you enter. The library uses the LC classification scheme to shelve books. This means that instead of numbers like 636.7 for dogs or 970.1 for Indians of North America, OIT's books will start with SF426 for dogs or E77 for Indians.

Current periodicals (journals and newspapers) are located in the "Pit". This area is in the north corner of the library down the stairs or ramp. Older periodical issues are located to the right as you enter the library. In addition, there are also microfilm and microfiche holdings.

Government documents (both Federal and Oregon) are located at the beginning of the Periodicals section.

Computer use

OIT offers many different databases through the Library computers. These databases can only be accessed at the Library unless you are a registered OIT student or employee. Because of the variety of databases, ask at the Reference desk (across from the Checkout Desk) if you need help in locating material.

Though you cannot use most of OIT Library's electronic databases off campus, OIT's catalog (Hedgehog) and the ORBIS (consortium of academic libraries) catalog are accessible from the library's home page.

Library Services available to ACP and HST Program Students

In addition to the services available to all area high school students, those students who are taking classes through OIT are offered some additional services. Students who are in the Advanced Credit or the High School Transition Program are eligible to apply for off-campus access to library databases and can request Interlibrary Loan services from the OIT library.
