Joel Herzberg

Joel Herzberg

Alumnus, Class of 2012
Major(s): Geomatics
Hometown: Roseburg, Oregon

Why did you choose Oregon Tech?

I chose Oregon Tech because it was the closest college that had a Bachelors program in Land Surveying/Geomatics, and mostly because of the recommendation given by professional land surveyors and graduates of the Geomatics program.

What do you like best about your major?

I love the balance between working outdoors and working in the office, and that every job is a little different from the last job. I also enjoy searching for lost property corners and researching old deeds. One of my favorite jobs is taking the field data and creating a map from what we found.

What clubs or activities are you involved with?

I am currently the Vice President of the Oregon Tech Geomatics club. I am also the team captain for the Geomatics intramural softball team.

What career do you hope to have after you graduate from Oregon Tech?

I have been working for the Bureau of Land Management for the last two summers and I hope to make a career with BLM Cadastral. I really enjoy retracing the original public land surveys.

Do you have any advice for incoming students?

Take the opportunity to network with as many professionals and students as you can you never know when those networks will come in handy. I would also recommend that an incoming student attend as many surveying conferences as they can as those are great times to learn and meet future employers. Also take the time to become involved with the Geomatics club and the NSPS competition.
