Oregon Tech Evens CCC Mark with Sweep at Corban

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Marlee Smith and Kelsey Sampson combined for 20 kills, as Oregon Tech
managed to even their Cascade Conference record at 1-1 with a sweep over
Corban University 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-15) tonight at the C.E. Jeffers
Sports Center in Salem.
The Owls (7-7) will take on rival Southern Oregon University this Friday in Oregon Tech’s only CCC match of the week.
Oregon Tech was led offensively by Smith with 12 kills, while Sampson and Renee Baumann added eight and four, respectively. Kayleigh Whelchel tallied a match-high 15 assists, with Megan Holland adding nine and Victoria Porter five assists of her own in the third and final set. Sampson also anchored Tech’s defense with a match-high 18 digs with Marie Baumann adding 15 digs. Tech got a match-high tying five blocks each by Kylie Kitzmiller and R. Baumann.
The opening set would see Oregon Tech jump out to a five-point lead (6-1) behind the serving of Jennifer Lakin. Corban used an 11-7 run to pull within a single point (13-12) on a service ace, but Oregon Tech notched the next three points to take a 16-12 lead. CU would pull within two points (18-16) but that would be as close as the home team would get, as Oregon Tech closed the set on a 7-3 run to earn the 25-19 victory.
Set 2 would see Oregon Tech go up 7-3 before pushing its advantage to 11 points, 20-9. The visitors would earn set-point, 24-11. CU recorded the next two points, but a set-ending kill from Marlee Smith pushed the Owls to s 25-13 victory.
In what proved to be the final set, Oregon Tech ran their way to a 20-10 advantage with Corban closing to within seven points after using 5-2 run to make it 22-15. Two straight kills by the Owls, along with a match-ending block by Madisen Garlie and Mykala Rubey would secure the sweep as the Owls picked up a 25-15 win.
