KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – In Oregon Tech’s inaugural baseball alumni game played Saturday, the current Owl players bested the alumni, 14-9, in a 12-inning affair.
The alumni struck first, jumping out to a 5-2 lead through six innings, following a solid pitching performance by Matt Bellando (2010-11) who went 5 strong giving up one earned run and striking out 4 batters.
The alumni started the scoring in the top of the first after a Kory Locken (2009-12) walk and a Trent Smith (2008-11) single. Zach Earle (2009-12) next drove a double into the right centerfield gap scoring two. The alumni put up two more runs in the second, as Jason Mortenson (2004-06) singled and then scored on an RBI double from his brother, Jeff (2006-07), who later scored on a sacrifice fly by Trent Smith. Jeff Mortenson drove another run in the 4th inning with his second double of the game to take a 5-1 lead through that frame.
The 2012-13 Owls team started to make their comeback in the fifth when freshman Ethan Schlecht led off the inning with a long home run to left. They would tack two more on in the sixth inning after a two run double by Tyson Dahl. A three run triple by Jared Nelson would knot the game up at 7-7 after seven innings. Back-to-back-to-back doubles by Marty Shanks, Brent Hegdahl and Kyle Seutter in the 8th would put the current Owls up by two runs in the 8th until a two run homer by alumni, Matt Miles (1990-91) in the 9th would tie it back up. The current roster would then add four more in extra innings to wrap up the victory.
Brent Hegdahl led the current Owls with a 3-3 day including a triple and a double. Ben Krueger, Jared Nelson and Marty Shanks all added two hits for the 2012 team.
Jeff Mortenson collected two doubles and two RBI with Matt Miles add two homeruns and three RBI for the alumni.
