Oregon Tech Evens Record to 5-5 with Sweep at UC-Merced Tournament

MERCED, Calif. – Kelsey Sampson recorded 24 kills on the day to lead the Oregon Tech volleyball team to a pair of victories in day 1 of the UC-Merced Tournament played today at Hostetler Court in Merced.
Oregon Tech evened their record to 5-5 on the season and will face Cal State San Marcos in the early game Saturday and close out the tournament with a 4:30 p.m. affair with West Coast Baptist.
Oregon Tech swept the day, taking out Pacific Union College 3-0, (25-20, 25-13, 25-18) and next turned around to defeat host UC-Merced 3-0, (25-16, 25-17, 25-13).
Sampson recorded 13 kills and 9 digs, with Marlee Smith adding eight kills and 10 digs to lead the Owls over PUC. The setter duo of Kayleigh Whelchel and Megan Holland combined for 24 assists with Marie Baumann anchoring the Owls’ defense with 17 digs.
In game 2, Sampson once again led the Owls offensively with 11 kills, followed by Smith with seven and Mykala Rubey with six kills. Holland and Whelchel together finished with 21 assists and Marie Baumann closing out with eight.
