Coates was a two-time first-team all-conference player in the Central Valley League and received 6A second-team All-State honors in 2009. Coates helped the South Salem High Saxons to a 2009 conference championship and a third place finish in the OSAA State Championships. Coates batted .411 with 40 hits, including 27 runs, 34 RBI with five doubles, two triples and five homeruns. A Dental Hygiene major at Oregon Tech.
