Tech Splits Exhibition Doubleheader with St. Katherine

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech’s game 1 comeback bid fell short, while the Owls came from behind in game 2 over St. Katherine College in an exhibition doubleheader held today at Kiger Stadium.  The Firebirds recorded a 9-7 win in the opener with Tech taking the nightcap by a 4-3 final.

The exhibition contest did not count toward overall records or overall statistics.  Oregon Tech will resume NAIA West action this Friday and Saturday when the Owls host Concordia University in a pair of doubleheaders at Kiger Stadium.  Friday’s games start at 3 p.m. while the Owls close out the 2014 season on Saturday versus the Cavaliers beginning at 11 a.m.

Game 1 – A pair of four-run innings in the opener put the Firebirds up 8-1 before Tech mounted their comeback.  An Ethan Schlecht two-run homerun over the leftfield wall, along with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a Marty Shanks bases clearing double, pulled the Owls within two runs at 9-7.

Tech would put runners on first and second in their last at-bat in the seventh, but a strikeout and ground out ended the game by the same 9-7 margin.

Game 2- Each team would notch single runs in both the third and fourth innings of the nine inning nightcap.  Ryan Hayden plated the Owls’ first run on a ground out to second base, while a Ryan Grant RBI single in the fourth made it a 2-2 game.  Once again the Firebirds took a lead, 3-2, but Aaron Bocchi tied the game at 3-all with two out a RBI single.

Heading to the final inning, Ben Krueger earned a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Ryan Hayden next provided the heroics driving a ball to deep right-center field for a walk-off double plating Krueger for a 4-3 win.
