BEAVERTON, Ore. – Current Oregon Tech basketball player and track and field NAIA All-American, Bryant Sentman, has been nominated for the upcoming 59th Annual Oregon Sports Awards Show. Sentman is a nominee for the Ad Rutschman Small-College Athlete of the Year for his efforts in 2010.
Former basketball All-American Justin Parnell is a finalist for the 2010 award, while former Oregon Tech athletes to receive the Ad Rutschman Small-College Athlete of the Year Award include Kelsi Haylett (basketball, softball and track and field) in 2007 and Ryan Fiegi (basketball) in 2008.
Sentman competed in 14 games last year for the Hustlin’ Owl basketball team before an injury ended his season. The setback did not hinder Sentman, as the 6-4 track and field star battled back to twice be named 2010 Cascade Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week last year. Along with the CCC accolades, Sentman went 6 feet 8.75 inches in the high jump to qualify him for that event at the NAIA national meet. A career-best 203-5 effort in the javelin at last year’s Oregon-California Border Clash in Arcata, Calif. also qualified him for that event at the NAIA national meet.
Focusing on just the decathlon at the 2010 NAIA track and field championships, Bryant Sentman had a goal —scoring at least 6,800 points in the decathlon, and did that in convincing manner. So convincing, in fact, that Sentman almost won a national championship. Sentman’s school-record of 6,993 points at the national meet was good for 2
nd place, while also making him a 2010 NAIA track and field NAIA All-American.
Just a junior, Sentman has a year of eligibility left in basketball, while competing as a senior for Oregon Tech in track and field this spring.
The Ad Rutschman Award is one of many awards that will be presented at the 2010 Oregon Sports Awards. The OSA annually honors the state’s top athletes, coaches and teams. A statewide media panel voted on the various awards. Emmy award-winning sportscaster Ahmad Rashad will be the master of ceremonies, and numerous sports celebrities will present the various awards. The event honors the top athletes, coaches, teams and organizations from the calendar year 2010.
The winners will be announced at the 2010 Oregon Sports Awards on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus in Beaverton. The show will be from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. A light hors d’oeuvres and cocktail reception hosted by Bill Schonely will begin at 5:30 p.m. Coffee and desserts will be served after the show.
Comcast SportsNet will televise the show Monday, January 31st at 8:00 pm.
