SAN DIEGO – The Oregon Tech baseball team dropped an 8-4 game in the 2011 season opener, while PLNU hurler Jack Archie quieted the OIT bats in the nightcap Saturday at Carroll B. Land Stadium in San Diego.
Oregon Tech trailed 5-4 in the season opener, but a three run eighth inning by the home team was all PLNU needed to put game 1 out of reach.
OIT’s Dylan Rogers walked, and would later come around to score in the second inning of the nightcap after a Tommy Wood bases loaded RBI walk, but Tech would manage just one hit, a seventh inning single by Matt Bellando, as the Owls fell in game 2 by a 6-1 final.
Tech’s Kory Locken accounted for OIT’s only extra base hit on the day, a double to lead off the third inning of game 1. Locken and Ryan Hayden added RBIs for Tech in the opener. Hayden, Colin Stock, Dylan Rogers, Wade Elliot and Jared Nelson all singled in game 1. Matt Bellando, game 1 starting pitcher, broke up a no-hit bid by PLNU pitcher Jack Archie in seventh inning of game 2.
Bellando (0-1) gave up eight hits and five earned runs to go with five strikeouts in game 1. Shea Bedortha (0-1) went six innings for the Owls in game 2, giving up nine hits and striking out four.
For PLNU, Tyler Kuehl and Rashad Taylor each drove in three runs in the opener and Jack Archie gave up just the one hit as he went the distance in game 2.
Oregon Tech (0-2) visits La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif. on Sunday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
