Owl Bats Show Some Life in 1-0 Win

02.12.2010

REDDING, Cal. – Oregon Tech pitcher Taylor Schmidt picked up her first career collegiate win in a 1-0 victory this afternoon over Biola University (0-2) at the Field of Dreams in Redding.  Schmidt allowed just four hits to help Oregon Tech (1-1) get their first win of the 2010 campaign.

After going hitless in game 1 of the Simpson tournament, Oregon Tech connected for five hits in game 2.  Ashleigh Larson drove in the Owls only run on a single to right center after back-to-back two out walks put Tech runners on first and second.  That was the only run Schmidt would need.

The Owls looked to cushion their lead in the fourth after back-to-back singles by Kayde Schaefer and Sierra Patzke, while a hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs.  However, the Biola pitcher was able to coax three Owl batters into squib outs, as Tech still held on to the 1-0 lead.

Biola threatened twice in the late innings, but Schmidt was able to get a strikeout after a two out Eagle double in the sixth inning, and after BU got the tying run on second with one down in the seventh, a strikeout and pop out to the catcher would end the game.

Ashleigh Larson finished with two hits and the games only RBI in the 1-0 win for the Owls, while Kayde Schaefer also connected for two hits.  Patzke accounted for the Owls fifth hit of the game.  Freshman hurler Taylor Schmidt struck out five and got 12 ground ball outs in her pitching debut.

The Owls take on No. 4 ranked Point Loma in game 3 of the Simpson University tournament this afternoon beginning at 4:00 pm
