Owls Finish 3-1 at NNU Tournament

NAMPA, Idaho - The Oregon Tech baseball team improved to 6-10 on the season after picking up two wins in the second day of the Northwest Nazarene University baseball tournament today in Nampa. The Owls defeated Whitworth by a 15-4 final then turned around to hand host NNU an 8-7 setback in game 2. Oregon Tech has now won three straight heading into tomorrow’s contest with The College of Idaho.
The Owls led from the onset and after a five run 3rd inning, burst ahead 8-1. Tech gathered three more runs in the 4th and added two each in the 5th and 7th to move to a 15-4 win. Oregon Tech struck for 19 hits in the opener, including 10 for extra bases. Cory Staniforth belted two homeruns, while Phil Sacks added another. Kory Locken and Colin Stock went for two double each, while Ryson Mauricio, Cory Spires and Zack Earle each doubled in game 1. Tech also stole five bases. Shea Bedortha picked up his first win on the season, allowing just four hits.
The Owls struck for three in the 1st to lead early against the host team in game 2. NNU got three of their own in the 2nd inning, and took a 4-3 lead in the 4th inning. A single run in the 6th for Oregon Tech then tied the contest at 4-4, while the teams were still tied at 6-6 after seven innings. Oregon Tech took control in the 8th inning with two runs, while only allowing the Crusaders one to lead 8-7 heading to the last inning of play. After the Owl offense could not pick up an insurance run, Tech pitching also kept the NNU bats quiet, as Oregon Tech held on for the 8-7 win.
Locken, Smith and Staniforth each doubled in the nightcap, while Earle homered and went for three RBI in the game 2 win. Ryson Mauricio finished 2-for-4, while Staniforth knocked in two runs. Working in relief for starting pitcher Dylan Bedortha, Frank Charlton won his first game of the season, while Darryl Swearingen worked the 9th inning to get the save.
