Owls Split NW Cup Play on Sunday
02.21.2010
CLACKAMAS, Ore. – The Oregon Tech softball team managed a split today in day 2 of the Northwest Cup hosted by Concordia University. The Owls took an 11-3 game from Puget Sound this morning, but after an early game 2 lead over Pacific University, fell by a 12-4 final.
After finishing 3-1 on the weekend, the Owls are now even on the year with a 5-5 record.
Puget Sound led 3-1 early, but a three run 3rd inning gave the Owls all the run support needed. A seven run outburst in the 4th inning ended the game early due to the 8-run rule, as the Owls won the opener 11-3.
Tides turned in the nightcap, however. The Owls took a 4-0 lead into the early innings, but Pacific answered with a five run 3rd inning to take the lead for good. A Boxer seven run fifth ended the game early by a 12-4 final.
Sara Coates helped the Owls to a game 1 win after a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double, homerun and four RBI. Jess Plummer added a homerun of her own to go with two hits and three RBI. Ashleigh Larson doubled, while Taylor Schmidt moved to 3-1 on the season after picking up the win.
Plummer stayed hot in game two going 2-for-3 with a double, while Bree Larson finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Oregon Tech will resume action, traveling to Medford and the Southern Oregon Tournament, with doubleheaders scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Owls (5-5) face Biola University, a team they beat 1-0 earlier in the season, to begin tournament play.
