Owls Swept by Yotes

04.03.2010

CALDWELL, Idaho. - The College of Idaho connected for 40 hits in today’s doubleheader to sweep Oregon Tech in NAIA West play, 25-8 and 8-0 at Wolfe Field this afternoon in Caldwell. The games were originally scheduled for Klamath Falls, but snow forced the series to Caldwell, with OIT as the home team.

Oregon Tech connected for six doubles in today’s opener, but errors proved costly when the Yotes struck for 14 runs in a second inning outburst to take control of game 1, as Tech fell 25-8.  Yote hurler Levi Mitchum threw a four-hit shutout and struck out 11 Owls in an 8-0 game 2 win to take the sweep.

Trent Smith finished 3-of-5 at the plate, including a RBI and double in the opener, while teammates Cory Staniforth, Cory Spires and Hayden Wolfe added two hits apiece.  Colin Stock drove in a run and walked three times, with Kevin Conway contributing two RBI with Zack Earle and Spires driving in a run each.  Both of Staniforth’s hits were for extra bases.

The Owls only connected with four hits in the nightcap, as Zack Earle was the only Owl with two hits and Cory Locken and Staniforth finished with one hit each.

The two teams will meet tomorrow at 11 a.m. to conclude the series.
