Owl rally falls short in opener, settles for split

ASHLAND, Ore. – Oregon Tech stranded 11 runners in today’s opener, and could not capitalize with no outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, falling 3-2 in game 1.  The Owls took game 2 by a 6-2 final to manage a split over the Raiders of Southern Oregon.

Oregon Tech moves to 19-17 overall and 6-4 in the league standings.  Southern Oregon is now 9-15 on the season and 5-5 in the CCC.

In the opener, both teams scored a pair of runs in the opening frame and then went silent until late in the game. Tech’s Sara Coates drove in the games first score with an RBI single in the first inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Raiders got back on the board.

SOU’s Bailey Price started the rally with a double to the wall in center. After a ground out, SOU got a two-out walk and Jessica Flores then followed with a two-run double to center to give the Raiders a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Oregon Tech fought back and cut the deficit to 3-2 on a Jess Plummer RBI single. Tech managed to load the bases with no outs, but SOU relief pitcher Lauren Keel got a pop up and two strikeouts to seal the victory.

Taylor Schmidt led the Tech offense in the opener with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.  Sara Coates and Jess Plummer added RBI’s.

In the nightcap, SOU took advantage of three OIT errors in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 lead.

OIT came back with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth, but the Raiders would tie it up in the fifth on an unearned run.

The Owls finally broke it open in the top of the seventh with four runs on six hits to put the Raiders away.

Taylor Schmidt went the distance for Oregon Tech, limiting the Raiders two three hits in the complete game victory.  Schmidt also added a single and RBI. Jess Plummer had three hits, including a double and a RBI. Ashleigh Larson finished with two hits and two RBI, with Bree Larson and Andria Wheatley driving in a run each in the nightcap. 

Oregon Tech travels to Eastern Oregon Friday and College of Idaho Saturday.
