Nikki Smith Brings Home Top Finish at Chico Twilight

Chico, Cal. - Offering outstanding track and field competition last Friday and Saturday at University Stadium, the Oregon Tech track and field team had a chance to compete against some of the top athletes on the West Coast at this year's annual Chico Twilight Distance Carnival held on the campus of Chico State University.

Nikki Smith brought home the only top finish for any Tech athlete, winning the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.18. Smith finished third in the 400m hurdles in 1:05.02. Kaela Ash crossed the line in seventh place in the 400 in a time of 1:02.76. Both Kelly Hawkins and Mikayla Morgan finished in the top-eight in the high jump, both going 4-9.00. Beth Fuller and Brianne Kenyon finished four-five in the shot put, with Fuller going 40-03.25 and Kenyon 39-07.75. Kenyon also got a fourth place finish in the discus (128-01) and eighth in the hammer (132-06). Sara Schelb finished second in the javelin with a throw of 138-10 and Blair Wilkenson followed with a toss of 124-05.

Joel Matchett went 45-04.25 in the triple jump to place second overall, while Jesse Brewster went 41-03.25, good for a sixth place finish. Top-eight finishes went to Kyle Gomez in the 200 (23.19), Sean O'Brien in the steeplechase (11:52.68), Donald North in the pole vault (13-02), Nate Lewis in the high jump (6-02.75) and Casey DePeel in the long jump (20-02.50). Bryant Sentman finished sixth overall in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.37 and the pole vault (13.06.25).

The Owls will complete in Ashland, Ore. next weekend at the Oregon-California four-way beginning at 10:00am on the campus of Southern Oregon University.
