VANCOUVER, Canada – A pair of Austin Fruson clutch game-winning hits lifted University of British Columbia to a sweep over Oregon Tech by scores of 5-3 and 3-1 today at Thunderbird Park in Vancouver, Canada.
The Owls drop to 16-29 overall and 9-17 in NAIA West play. The teams finish their series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Thunderbird Park.
The Owls struck first in the third inning, when two singles and an error loaded the bases with none out. Ryan Hayden grounded into a double play with a run scoring to put the Owls up 1-0.
The 'Birds jumped out in front in the bottom half with a pair of runs to move up 2-1.
It stayed that way until the sixth, when the lead changed two more times as the teams scored two runs each. The Owls took advantage of a UBC infield error to bring home a pair of runs on groundouts and take a 3-2 lead, but the ‘Birds answered back in the home half of the inning.
A two-run home run over the left field fence put UBC up 4-3, while an insurance run in the seventh made it 5-3. Tech would go scoreless over the next two innings, as the Owls fell by a 5-3 final.
Kory Locken and Ryan Grant went 2-for 5 at the plate, while Tyson Dahl recorded Tech’s only RBI.
In game two, with the teams locked in a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning, an RBI single put UBC up for good, 2-1. The 'Birds added another run in the inning on a sac fly, and held on for the 3-1 victory.
Tech’s Alex Reynolds, Hayden, Dylan Rogers, Locken and Grant added singles in the game 2 loss.
