Oregon Tech announces five scholarship recipients

The Oregon Tech athletic department announced today the recipients of this year’s scholarship awards for the Howard and Ginger Morris, David L. Terhune Memorial, Mike Snider Memorial and Leo J. Bocchi Memorial Scholarships.

Sierra Patzke and Jesse Brewster were again named the recipient of the Leo J. Bocchi Memorial Scholarship at Oregon Institute of Technology for the 2011-12 academic year.  This is the third-straight year Patzke has been named the honoree and second for Brewster.  Patzke, a member of the Oregon Tech softball team from 2009-11, is a 2008 graduate of Henley High School, and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography.  Brewster, a 2007 Henley High School graduate, will begin his senior season on the Oregon Tech track and field team competing in both jumping and sprinting events.  Brewster is pursuing a degree in health sciences.

The Leo J. Bocchi Memorial Scholarship award goes to a Klamath County high school graduate enrolled at OIT, active in athletics for the Hustlin’ Owls and must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. 

The Leo Bocchi Memorial Scholarship was established in 1988 in memory of Leo Bocchi of Klamath Falls, Ore., by his friends at Pepsi-Cola and his wife, Marge Bocchi.

Past winners of the award are:  Rachel Novak (2009-10); Quinn Hummel (2007–09); Brandy Bocchi (2003–07); Brooke Long (1999–2003); Kendra Cramer (1998–99); Deborah Neighbors (1996–98); Lisa Wallace (1995–96); Kimberly Griffith (1993–95); John Mick (1991–93) and Mike Allison (1990–91).

Marie Baumann was named the recipient of the David L. Terhune Memorial Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year.  Baumann, a sophomore on the Oregon Tech volleyball team this upcoming season, averaged 2.33 digs and earned her way into a starting role midway through her freshman season for the Owls.  Marie is a 2009 graduate of Weston-McEwen High School in Athena, Ore., and is pursuing a degree in accounting and business at Oregon Institute of Technology. 

The David L. Terhune Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of a long time booster of OIT athletic programs and is awarded to a full time student that demonstrates a commitment to Oregon Tech athletics.

Past winners of the award include: Jackie Polette (2009-11), Kelsey Stolz (2006-09); Jamie Ferry (2003-06); Lois Shoemaker (2002-03); Andrea Nations (2001-02); Josh Woodson (2000-01); Alissa Corn (1999-2000) and Josh Conrad (1998-99).

The Mike Snider Memorial Scholarship was awarded to first-time recipient Katie Waugh for the upcoming 2011-12 academic year. Waugh, a member of the Oregon Tech cross country and track and field teams, helped lead the OIT 4x800 relay team to an appearance at the 2011 NAIA national meet and will begin her third season of competition in both sports this fall and next spring.  Waugh, a 2009 graduate of Henley High School, begins her first year in the nursing program at Oregon Tech this fall.

The Mike Snider Memorial Scholarship is named in the honor of an outstanding student-athlete who was killed in an industrial accident.  The recipient must be enrolled full time with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrate a commitment to Oregon Tech athletics.

Past award winners include: Darrick Waugh (2008-11), Jenni Miiller (2007-08); Patrick Snider (2003-07); Megan Leppert (2002-03); Tore Nelson (2000-02); Josh Conrad (1999-2000); Megan Mills (1996-1999); Lana Hoppe (1994-96); Mike Tijerina (1993-94); Dave Allison (1992-93); Tina Jones (1990-92); Misti Collins (1989-90); Ken Stout (1988-89); Brad Covington (1987-88) and Doug Mauch (1986-87).

Morgan Hofman has been named the recipient of the Howard and Ginger Morris Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year.  Hofman, an upcoming senior on the women’s basketball team, competed three seasons for the Lady Owls, averaging 9.7 points and 3.5 rebounds during her junior season.  Hofman is a 2008 graduate of Mt. View High School in Bend, Ore., and is pursuing a medical imaging technology degree at Oregon Tech.

The scholarship is named in honor of retired Oregon Tech Athletic Director Howard Morris and his wife Ginger.  Howard also coached baseball, football and wrestling over his tenure.  The scholarship is awarded to a full time student who demonstrates outstanding citizenship and moral character.  The recipient must also possess athletic ability, contribute to OIT athletics by being a team player and who maintains satisfactory academic progress. 

Past scholarship winners include: Brittany Cherry (2010-11), Mike Nieraeth (2008-10); Ben Baker (2006-08); Becky Schwartz (2004-06) and Trevor Mauch (2003-04).
