Oregon Tech announces four scholarship recipients

The Oregon Tech athletic department announced today the recipients of this year’s scholarship awards for the Howard and Ginger Morris, David L. Terhune Memorial, Mike Snider Memorial and Leo J. Bocchi Memorial Scholarships.

Sierra Patzke has been named the winner of the Leo J. Bocchi Memorial Scholarship at Oregon Institute of Technology for 2010-11. This is the second straight year Patzke has been named the recipient. Patzke
(So. Klamath Falls, Ore.), a member of the Oregon Tech softball team, batted .222 with four doubles, one homerun and 12 RBI during the 2010 season. Sierra is a 2008 Graduate of Henley High School, and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography.
The Leo J. Bocchi Memorial Scholarship award goes to a Klamath County high school graduate enrolled at OIT, active in athletics for the Hustlin’ Owls and must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
The Leo Bocchi Memorial Scholarship was established in 1988 in memory of Leo Bocchi, of Klamath Falls, Oregon by his friends at Pepsi-Cola and his wife, Marge Bocchi.
Past winners of the award are: Rachel Novak (2009 – 2010); Quinn Hummel (2007 – 2009); Brandy Bocchi (2003 – 2007); Brooke Long (1999 – 2003); Kendra Cramer (1998 – 1999); Deborah Neighbors (1996 – 1998); Lisa Wallace (1995 – 1996); Kimberly Griffith (1993 – 1995); John Mick (1991 – 1993) and Mike Allison (1990 – 1991)
Jackie Polette - David L. Terhune Memorial Scholarship recipient.  |
Jackie Polette
(Helena, Mont.) received the David L. Terhune Memorial Scholarship for the third consecutive year. Polette will be a junior on the Oregon Tech volleyball team this upcoming season after the setter averaged 3.21 assists and 1.3 digs for the Owls her sophomore season. Jackie is a 2008 graduate of Capital High School in Helena, MT and is a medical imaging technology major at Oregon Institute of Technology.
The David L. Terhune Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of a long time booster of OIT athletic programs and is awarded to a full time student that demonstrates a commitment to Oregon Tech athletics.
Past winners of the award include: Kelsey Stolz (2006-08); Jamie Ferry (2003-05); Lois Shoemaker (2002); Andrea Nations (2001); Josh Woodson (2000); Alissa Corn (1999) and Josh Conrad (1998).

This year’s Mike Snider Memorial Scholarship was awarded for the third consecutive year to Darrick Waugh (Klamath Falls, Ore.). Waugh is a graduate of Henley High School and will compete in his third season with both the cross country and track and field team at Oregon Tech this fall and next spring. Waugh is a health science major at OIT.
The Mike Snider Memorial Scholarship is named in the honor of an outstanding student-athlete who was killed in an industrial accident. The recipient must be enrolled full time with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrate a commitment to Oregon Tech athletics.

Brittany Cherry
(Pasco, Wash.) has been named the recipient of the Howard and Ginger Morris Scholarship for the upcoming 2010-11 academic year. Cherry will be a senior on both the basketball and softball teams this coming year after earning all-conference recognition as a junior in both sports. On the hardwood, Cherry averaged 10.2 points and 8.0 rebound per contest and was a first team selection. On the diamond the outfielder was a honorable mention selection after batting .313 with eight doubles, four homeruns and 20 RBI. Cherry was also a Gold Glove award winner for her effort on the defensive end. Cherry is a medical imaging technology major at Oregon Tech.
The scholarship is named in honor of retired Oregon Tech Athletic Director Howard Morris and his wife Ginger. Howard also coached baseball, football and wrestling over his tenure. The scholarship is awarded to a full time student who demonstrates outstanding citizenship and moral character. The recipient must also possess athletic ability, contribute to OIT athletics by being a team player and who maintains satisfactory academic progress.
Past scholarship winners include: Mike Nieraeth (2009-10); Ben Baker (2006-08); Becky Schwartz (2005-07) and Trevor Mauch (2003-04).
