Oregon Tech Outlasts UC-Merced, Falls to No. 5 Biola

ASHLAND, Ore. – Oregon Tech edged UC-Merced 3-2, (27-25, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12) in match 1 today, earning their first win of the 2012 season, while fifth-ranked Biola University swept the Owls 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-19) in match 2, concluding the Paul Elliott Invitational hosted by Southern Oregon University Saturday in Ashland.

Kristin Walters led the Owls with 20 kills in the victory, while Kara Young added 17.   The duo both finished with a double-double effort after recording 19 digs and 16 digs respectively.  Setter Kayleigh Whelchel recorded a career-high 47 assists to go with 10 digs, while Marie Baumann finished with a match-high 29 digs.

Oregon Tech (1-3) came up short versus perennial power Biola, as the fifth-ranked team in the nation swept the Owls in Tech’s final match of the weekend.  Whelchel added 20 assists in the match, while Baumann added 15 assists to her career-high total.  Aurora Penoyar led Tech with 6 kills with Young adding 5 and Walters 4 spikes in the loss.
