No. 1 Fresno Pacific Sweeps Lady Owls

(Ashland, Ore.) – The defending NAIA National Champions and the number one team in the nation, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, wasted little time in handing Oregon Tech its first loss of the 2010 season 25-16, 25-13, 25-6 in the fifth match of the Paul Elliott Invitational Tournament being played on the campus of Southern Oregon University.

The Lady Owls drop to 1-1 on the young season and will take on Embry-Riddle (FL) in the 11:30 match on Saturday morning before wrapping up the tournament at 5:30 pm against Montana Western. The Sunbirds improve to 2-0 with the win and will take on Embry-Riddle (FL) at 3:30 pm tomorrow.

No. 1 FPU used its size advantage to total 14 blocks and hold the Owls to a -.173 hitting percentage. Martina Gregusova led FPU with eight kills, eight digs and six blocks. Kathleen Anderson added five blocks of her own to go with five kills.

Keke Wang finished with a team-high nine kills for the Sunbirds with Erica Adachi dishing out 18 assists and Mariah Mandelbaum adding 15 digs.

Sophomore Kristen Walters led Oregon Tech with five kills in the match. Junior Sara Svedin led the Lady owls with eight assists.

After winning the first set 25-16, the Sunbirds jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two. The Owls fought back to make it 9-7, but Gregusova and Wang sparked a 6-0 run from which the Sunbirds wouldn't look back.

In set three, FPU held a 6-4 lead before going on an 8-1 run to go up 14-5. The Owls managed one more point, but the Sunbirds reacted with 11 unanswered. Anderson put the exclamation point on the victory, with a kill to end the set and the match 25-6.
