Oregon Tech Wins Pair in Day 1 of UC-Merced Invite

MERCED, Calif. – Senior outside hitter Kristen Walters paced Oregon Tech with a double-double 14 kills and 11 digs, as Oregon Tech took a five set thriller over Embry-Riddle University (AZ) in match 1, while the Owls had no trouble in a three set sweep of West Coast Baptist. Oregon Tech defeated Embry-Riddle this morning 3-2, (25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 16-14) and moved to 6-3 overall with a 3-0, (25-13, 25-19, 25-16) victory this afternoon
The Owls will take on Menlo College Saturday at 9 a.m. and conclude tournament play versus host UC-Merced beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Oregon Tech edged Embry-Riddle in hitting percentage .121 to .119 with Embry-Riddle recording 52 team kills versus 48 for the Owls, along with 82 digs versus Tech’s 71 in the five set contest.
Along with Walters’ team-high 14 kills, both freshmen Kara Young and Marlee Smith tallied 9 kills apiece and combined for 15 digs with Smith adding 3 aces in the morning victory for the Owls. Kayleigh Whelchel recorded 36 assists and 12 digs, while Marie Baumann, ranking in the NAIA’s top-10 defensively (5.1 digs/g), came up with a match-high 26 digs.
In match 2 the freshman duo of Julie Pfeifer and Kara Young led the way with 6 kills each. Young added 7 digs and 4 aces with Pfeifer recording five digs in Tech’s win. Megan Holland recorded 25 assists and 4 aces with Marlee Smith gathering a match-high 15 digs.
