KLAMATH FALLS, Ore - The Oregon Tech volleyball team battled hard in the final match of the Point Loma Invitational, but the effort fell short as San Diego Christian recorded the five set match win over the Owls (25-15, 18-25, 27-29, 25-21, 11-15).
After an 8-8 tie in the first set, it was all Oregon Tech when a Christine Bansen kill spurred a 10-0 run to put the Owls up 18-8. Miranda Weitz ended the first set 25-15 with a kill of her own.
After a 6-6 tie in set two, it was San Diego Christian that strung together five points to take an 11-6 lead. Oregon Tech (0-7) closed to 16-14, but could get no closer, dropping set two 25-18.
San Diego Christian jumped out early in set three leading 8-2. Oregon Tech battled back to tie it at 11-11 on a Joey Larsen ace and back-to-back kills by Miranda Weitz. A see-saw battle ensued, as both teams were tied 10 times over the course of the set, the last at 27-27, before the opponents put it away with the final two points.
The Owls went up 8-2 to open set four, but not before SDC closed the gap to 10-8. An Owl 6-1 run put OIT up 16-9 and didn't look back to go on and win set four 25-21.
Oregon Tech got the first point in the final set, but it was the only lead they would see. San Diego Christian followed with four straight points to take a 4-1 lead. Tech would close the deficit to 9-8, but SDC answered with three more to lead 12-9 and eventually win the set 15-11.
Megan Christensen followed this morning with another magnificent performance on the afternoon, coming up with a match-high 20 kills and 15 digs. Miranda Weitz added five kills followed by both Porsha Ellison and Bansen with four kills each. Sara Svedin added a team-high 17 assists with Jackie Polette adding 14. Bansen also recorded 12 digs.
After a seven match road trip to begin the 2009 season the Owls will host Concordia University and Warner Pacific College to open their home schedule, which also begins conference play. Match time for both Friday, September 4th and Saturday, September 5th is scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
