Pelarde, Minor Finish in Top-20 as Oregon Tech Opens Cross Country Season

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Jeff Pelarde and Scott Minor, running against a bulk of NCAA DI runners, placed in the top-20, as both the Oregon Tech men’s and women’s cross country team’s began the 2012 season at the Hornet Jamboree Saturday at Granite Park.

Jeff Pelarde led the Tech men in 20:27.7, while Scott Minor was just over four seconds behind, finishing the 4-mile course in 20:23.3.  Pelarde finished 17th overall and Minor 19th.  Paul Adams, running in his first collegiate event finished in 21:19.0, while teammate Kirby Garlitz followed closely with a time of 21:19.4.  Newcomer Matt Blanco timed in at 23:04.2, as the Owls earned a 6th place overall team finish.

Sacramento States Reesey Byers led the men, winning the individual title in 19:42.3, four seconds ahead of University of California runner Renaud Poizat who finished second in 19:46.3.

Sacramento State scored 23 points as a team, 40 ahead of second place Fresno State (63). Cal was third with 88, followed by Santa Clara (123), UC Davis (127) and Oregon Tech (139).

In the women’s 5K, Oregon Tech’s Kelly Coash was the top finisher for the Owls clocking in at 20:12.3.  Elissa Brouillard followed in 20:47.8 and Heidi Gunderson crossed in 22:01.5.  All Tech runners are newcomers to the Owl program.  Only three runners finished for Oregon Tech making them ineligible for a team score.

In the women's 5K race, University of California and Fresno State tied for the team title with 41 points. The Hornets scored 78 to finish third while UC Davis (89) and Santa Clara (93) completed the top five.  Fresno State's Lyndsie Etherton recorded the top individual time at 17:13.7.
