Cross Country opens 2010 season at Oregon Tech Invitational

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Five teams joined host Oregon Tech in what was to be a preview of the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship to be held at the Steen Sports Complex on Saturday, November 6th. All 10 conference teams will be competing in November, while just six ran in today’s event.

 

Oregon Tech’s Statia Smith took top honors for the Owls, finishing 18th in today’s Oregon Tech Invitational, while Scott Minor finished 20th in his first collegiate race to pace the Oregon Tech men.

 

Eastern Oregon University’s Karlee Coffey won the women’s individual championship finishing the 5K course in 19:01.30, with EOU’s DJ Flores coming away with the men’s individual title, crossing the finish line in 26:00.18.

 

The Eastern Oregon men dominated the 8K course with five runners crossing the tape after just six runners finishing.  The Concordia women took away the team title with four Cavaliers finishing in the top-10.

Oregon Tech’s Katie Waugh finished 26th with a time of 22:21.05, followed by Laruen Renie in 37th with a time of 23:14.45.  Rounding out the top-40 for the Owls was Lori Carter with a time of 23:40.47.

 

Four freshmen helped the Oregon Tech men to a fourth place finish.  Following the Owls’ Minor was freshman Kirby Garlitz in 23rd with a time of 28:36. 83.  Junior Darrick Waugh finished 25th with a time of 28:55.24, while freshman Kevin Jorgensen and James Hull came away with top-30 finishes in 28:56.12 and 29:07.73 respectively.

 

The Owls have a week off before competing at the Charles Bowles Invitation hosted by Willamette University at Bush Park in Salem on Saturday, October 2nd.
