Ashland, Ore. - The Oregon Tech women's soccer team started Cascade Conference play with a 1-0 win over rival Southern Oregon University today at University Field in Ashland. The Owls improve to 8-1 on the season and are 1-0 in the CCC. Southern drops to 2-6-1 and 0-1 in CCC action.
The first and only score of the game came in just the 5th minute of play on a Tech corner kick.
Oregon Tech's Brooke Cole (Portland, Ore.) put the ball in play from the corner and after the ball rattled around and could not be cleared by the Raiders, Owl midfielder Lisel Frazier (Klamath Falls, Ore.) managed to angle the ball into the net from near the end line to give the Owls a 1-0 edge. It was Frazier's first goal of the season, while Cole tallied her fourth assist.
The Owl defense then held steady for the remainder of the game to secure the 1-0 victory, but not before some close calls.
The Raiders nearly tied the match with a shot that bounced off the post and then again at the 88 minute mark when another Raider shot hit the crossbar.
SOU held an 18-6 advantage in shots - including 13 in the second period. The Owls combined for six shots, three in both the first and second periods.
Tech keeper Megan Ross (Medford, Ore.) came away with her fourth shutout of the year, accounting for 10 saves today against SOU.
