PORTLAND, Ore. –Behind two goals and two assist from senior Kaitlyn Tebbs, No. 1-ranked Concordia defeated Oregon Tech 6-1 in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday evening at Delta Park.
Concordia concluded the season undefeated for the second time in school history with a 16-0-2 record and compiled its ninth undefeated Cascade Collegiate Conference season with an 8-0-1 mark in league play.
As the top seed, the Cavaliers will host College of Idaho (10-7-0. 6-3-0 CCC) in the semifinals of the CCC Tournament on Nov. 6. C of I was the last CCC school to defeat the Cavs with a 2-1 win in 2009. Concordia avenged the loss with a 1-0 win in Caldwell in the CCC title game.
“We told the team the season is split up into three parts and we just finished with the first section,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “It’s a whole new game in the playoffs as every team is now fighting for their season.”
With the result, CU head coach Grant Landy upped his career mark to 250-48-20. The NAIA’s all-time leader in winning percentage (.817) became just the fifth NAIA coach to record 250 wins. He stands two wins shy of tying for No.4 all-time on the NAIA’s all-time wins list (Shelley Howieson; Simon Fraser; 1988-2008, 252-104-37).
The Cavs got off to a quick start on senior day as Tebbs (Bend, Ore./Bens H.S.) scored the first of her two goals on the day after just over two minutes had elapsed on the clock. Taking a pass from teammate Alex Thomas (Wilsonville, Ore./Wilsonville H.S.), Tebbs drove a low-shot into the opposite side of the net to give CU the 1-0 lead.
In the 18th minute, Tebbs would set up another senior, Kelton McFadden (Boise, Idaho/Timberline H.S.), for the team’s second score. Tebbs would tack on another assist by leading Kaylynn Winwood (Nampa, Idaho/Columbia H.S.) to a goal in the 31st minute.
Tahlia O’Loughlin (Boise, Idaho/Borah H.S.) scored in the 41st minute to give CU a 4-0 lead before the Owls took advantage of a free kick just outside the box at the 43:12 mark to get on the board.
After a foul 20 yards out, Brooke Cole (Portland, Ore./Westview H.S.) rocketed a ball over the four-person CU wall and into the upper-left corner of the net, perfectly outside the reach of Concordia keeper Tori Talbutt (Boise, Idaho/Capital H.S.).
Working the same combination from the first goal of the game, CU’s Thomas assisted Tebbs in the 57th minute for CU’s first of two goals in the second half. Alex Blalock (Flagstaff, Ariz./Coconino H.S.) scored the game’s final goal in the 80th minute after receiving a pass from Winwood.
Concordia outshot the Owls 19-to-9 in the contest and generated a 3-to-0 advantage in corner kicks. Anna Tozier (Medford, Ore.) stopped a game-high three saves for OIT while Talbutt earned the win with two saves in the first 45 minutes. Marie Burn (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium H.S.) also stopped two shots in the final frame to keep a personal shutout streak alive at nearly 200 minutes on goal this season.
