Parnell a Finalist at 59th Annual Oregon Sports Awards

BEAVERTON – After leading the Owls to back-to-back regular-season and conference tournament championships in both 2009 and 2010, former Oregon Tech standout Justin Parnell was selected as a finalist for the upcoming 59th Annual Oregon Sports Awards Show announced today.  Parnell is a finalist for the Ad Rutschman Small-College Athlete of the Year for his efforts on the hardwood in 2010.

Former Oregon Tech athletes to receive the Ad Rutschman Small-College Athlete of the Year Award include Kelsi Haylett (basketball, softball and track and field) in 2007 and Ryan Fiegi (basketball) in 2008.

Parnell, who ranked among the top 10 in no less than six CCC statistical categories last year, was  voted the 2009-10 Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in men’s basketball, while also named a 2010 NAIA All-American after helping the Hustlin’ Owls into the round of 16 at last year’s NAIA national tournament.  In just two seasons at Oregon Tech, Parnell broke into the 1,000 point club and currently ranks 18th in scoring at OIT with 1,147 points.  The 6-4 point guard led the Owls in scoring (17.6 ppg), rebounds (7.0) and assists (162) – The last player at Oregon Tech to top all three categories since Doc Earl during the 1986-87 season.

The Ad Rutschman Award is one of many awards that will be presented at the 2010 Oregon Sports Awards.  The OSA annually honors the state’s top athletes, coaches and teams.  A statewide media panel voted on the various awards. Emmy award-winning sportscaster Ahmad Rashad will be the master of ceremonies, and numerous sports celebrities will present the various awards.  The event honors the top athletes, coaches, teams and organizations from the calendar year 2010.

The winners will be announced at the 2010 Oregon Sports Awards on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus in Beaverton.  The show will be from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  A light hors d’oeuvres and cocktail reception hosted by Bill Schonely will begin at 5:30 p.m. Coffee and desserts will be served after the show.

Comcast SportsNet will televise the show Monday, January 31st at 8:00 pm.
