Oregon Tech Second Half Rally Falls Short, Owls fall to No. 12 Southern Oregon, 74-63

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Trailing by as many as 20 points, Oregon Tech battled back to close to with 2 points late in the second half, but No. 12 Southern Oregon University outscored the Hustlin’ Owls 18-5 over the final 3:20, as Tech fell by a 74-63 final in Cascade Collegiate Conference basketball action tonight at Danny Miles Court.

The loss drops Oregon Tech to 10-9 overall and 1-6 in CCC play.  Southern Oregon moves to 14-4 on the season and 6-1 in CCC action.  The win for the Raiders is the first at Danny Miles Court since the 1998-99 season.

The twelfth-ranked Raiders raced to an 8-0 lead to open the contest before Josh Johnson connected on a short jumper on Tech’s ninth shot attempt of the game to make it 8-2 with 16:31 remaining in the opening period. 

SOU led by double digits for the first time on a Kyle Tedder layup, 12-2, and moved up by a commanding 20 point lead, 29-9, just past the midway point of period 1.  With under two minutes on the clock the Raiders continued to hold the 20 point advantage before back-to-back triples by Johnson cut the Owls deficit to 14 points.  SOU scored the final points of the period, as Tech trailed 40-24 at the intermission.

Heading into the second half the Owls would chip away, eventually trimming a 16 point SOU lead back to just 10, 46-36, as Kyle Waits and Alex Zerbach capped a 12-6 run with back-to-back baskets with 12:36 to play. 

The Raiders moved up by 11 points on three separate occasions, 53-42, but Tech would continue to rally, using a 14-5 push to pull to within just two points, 58-56, with 3:22 in the game. 

Tech, with the ball and trying to tie or go ahead, turned the ball over and that would be as close as the Owls would get.  SOU’s Kyle Tedder connected for a trey to give the momentum back to the visitors and on SOU’s next possession pushed the Raiders back to a 6 point lead on another 3-point field goal.  SOU would hit 10-of-10 free throws over the final two minutes and earn the 74-63 win.

Josh Johnson scored a game-high 27 points, while adding 7 rebounds and 3 assists.  Derek Evans netted 8 points with David Clarke adding 7 points in the loss for the Owls.  Brandon Bautista came away with 7 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists with Evans handing out 4 assists in the game.

Kyle Tedder recorded 22 points in the win for the Raiders, with David Sturner adding 14 points and 23 rebounds, including 14 from the offensive end, for the double-double effort.  Eric Thompson finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds with Taylor Roos an additional 10 points.

Oregon Tech, held to just 24.1% shooting the first half, hit for 41.9% in period 2 to finish at a 32.4% clip (22-for-68) for the game.  Southern Oregon was held to 25.9% in the second half, finishing 21-for-53 for the game (39.6%).  Both teams hit 9 shots from long range with SOU outrebounding Tech by a 43-39 margin.  The Owls finished 10-for-13 at the free throw line with the Raiders 23-of-30 at the charity stripe.

Oregon Tech will host Northwest University and The Evergreen State College this Friday and Saturday at Danny Miles Court.  Both games will tip at 7:30PM.
