ASHLAND, Ore. – Kyle Waits notched a career-high 36 points but it wasn’t enough as the Hustlin’ Owls fell to Southeast University – Florida by an 86-76 final in day 1 of the Flagship Inn Classic today in Ashland.
Oregon Tech fell to 4-5 overall and will take on New Hope Christian Saturday at 3:30 PM to conclude tournament play.
Oregon Tech jumped up early, leading 14-6 five minutes into the opening period. SEU scored the next seven to pull to within one point, 14-13, before leading Tech 23-21 with 11 minutes remaining.
Kyle Waits put Tech back on top with a dunk, 26-25, with the game being tied at 37-37. A 9-0 Fire run put SEU up 46-37 with under three minutes to play before the Owls cut their deficit to six points, 49-43, heading into halftime.
Tech never could regain a lead in the second half, cutting the Fire lead to two points on two occasions, but never could get closer.
Tech would trail by as many as 13 points before SEU would earn a 10 point win, 86-76.
Oregon Tech finished 30-of-61 from the floor (49.2%) and 7-for-23 from long range. SEU hit on 33-of-54 attempts (61.1%), including 10-of-16 from the 3-point line.
For Tech Kyle Waits was 15-of-22 from the field and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe for his career-high 36 points to lead all scorers. Josh Johnson chipped in 11 points and Derek Evans nine for the Owls.
Dwayne Johnson led the Fire with a team-high 24 points with Jake Hodges and Jordan Talley recording 16 points each.
