KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech didn’t allow Northwest Christian University a basket from beyond the arch and held the Beacons to just 53 points, as the Owls handed NCU their first loss in Cascade Conference play tonight at Danny Miles Court by a 72-53 final. Head Coach Danny Miles inches closer to career win 1000 and is now at 998 in his 43 seasons.
Oregon Tech moves to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference standings. NCU drops to 10-5 on the year and 4-1 in CCC action.
Tied 18-all at the midway point of the opening period, Mihajlo Matic and Josh Johnson connected on back-to-back triples and Oregon Tech never relinquished their lead throughout. Tech’s Duncan Schramm hit a trey at the 1:34 mark for the last score of the half, as the Owls led by their largest margin of nine in the opening stanza, taking the same 35-26 score into halftime.
NCU’s Coleton Baker brought the visitors to within eight points, 42-34, on a dunk at the 16:27 mark of the second half, but the Beacons would get no closer. Oregon Tech doubled the margin to 16 points, 55-39, on a Kyle Waits tip-in with 10:50 remaining and held on to the double digit lead for the remainder. The 19 point win, 72-53, was Tech’s largest margin in the game.
Duncan Schramm led Tech with a team-high 14 points, followed by 13 from Derek Evans. Kyle Waits added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Austen Flint handed out six assists and Schramm three steals in the win.
Austen Kemp recorded a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Both were game-highs. Javonte Byrd followed with 10 points for the Beacons only two players in double figures.
Tech finished 28-of-60 from the field (46.7%), including a 50.0% effort from the 3-point line (12-of-24). The Owls shot just four free throws making them all.
NCU shot 39.2% for the game on 20-of-51, while going 0-for-9 from long range. NCU made 13-of-16 free throws with the rebound battle tied 31-31.
