EUGENE, Ore. – Trailing by 18 points late in the game, Oregon Tech was able to cut their deficit to just six points, but the Owls were unable to get any closer, as Northwest Christian University earned a 62-55 win over Oregon Tech on Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference action at the Morse Event Center.
Oregon Tech is now even at 12-12 on the season and 5-7 in CCC play while Oregon Tech Head Coach Danny Miles will look for career win 1,000 tomorrow at Corban University.
The Owls got the first two points of the game but NCU quickly responded with nine straight and led for the remainder of the contest. The Beacons went ahead by as many as 18 points in the first half before claiming a 34-20 lead at the intermission. OIT was held to just 31% shooting before the break, including a 2-for-13 clip from three-point range.
The Beacons continued to hold a double-digit lead throughout the second half and had built an 18-point lead, 54-36 with 5:31 remaining. A three-pointer by Mihajlo Matic on the Owls’ next possession sparked the visitors to a late rally, climbing to within six points in the final minute. NCU then sealed the victory with three free-throws in the final 42 seconds to send Oregon Tech home with the loss.
Oregon Tech was led by Austen Flint, finishing with a team-high 12 points. Derek Evans added 11 points in the loss for the Owls. Josh Johnson scored four points and led all players with 11 rebounds and four steals while Brandon Bautista punched in seven points and five assists.
Northwest Christian was led by Coleton Baker, finishing with 20 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Spencer Coleman added 18 points and Austin Kuemper finished with 13, along with a team-high three assists.
