KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech and No. 15 Southern Oregon went wire-to-wire before the Raiders eked out a 69-67 win in men’s Cascade Conference basketball tonight at Danny Miles Court.
Oregon Tech falls to 15-13 on the season and even at 8-8 in CCC action. SOU improved to 22-6 on the season and 11-5 in the conference standings.
Oregon Tech would lead the Raiders by as many as 12 points with 11:42 on the clock in the first half, 23-11, before SOU rallied with an 18-0 run to take a six point lead, 29-23, with 6:22 remaining.
The drought ended after Kyle Waits connected on a 3-point field goal. The Owls would tie it up two more times before the visitors took a 37-36 lead into the half.
The game see-sawed throughout much of the second period with Oregon Tech leading by as many as five points and Southern Oregon three in the stretch. After 16 minutes, along with seven ties, Derek Evans gave the lead back to Tech, 65-64, on a jumper at the 3:09 mark with Kyle Waits following with a basket to give the home team a 67-63 advantage with 2:54 to play.
David Sturner followed with a triple to pull SOU to within one point, and after a Tech miss, Eric Thompson gave the lead back to the Raiders on a jumper and free throw, 69-67, with under two minutes remaining.
Both teams went dry over the last 1:56 before the Owls would get the last shot of the game to win. With 2.5 seconds, and having to go the length of the floor, the Owls inbounded the ball to Austen Flint and taking two dribbles launched a 45 footer that hit off the backboard wide right, as SOU earned the 69-67 win.
Brandon Bautista led Tech with 20 points to go with five assists. Kyle Waits finished with 19 points and six rebounds with Derek Evans adding eight points in the loss.
For SOU Eric Thompson recorded a game-high 24 points, with David Sturner coming away with 18 points. The duo secured a double-double with each grabbing 11 rebounds in the win. Jordan West netted 10 points on 4-of-4 from the floor.
