01.16.2013
LA GRANDE, Ore. – With the 2013 baseball season opener set for February, 2nd in Redding, Calif., Oregon Tech has been picked to finish seventh overall in the NAIA West Preseason Poll in a vote by the conference’s head coaches.
Including the Owls’ campaign opener, a non-conference affair at Simpson University, Tech begins the season with 29-straight games on the road. Oregon Tech’s 55-game spring schedule includes 14 home contests, beginning with conference doubleheaders versus Corban University on Saturday, March 23rd and Sunday, March 24th. Other home contests include conference doubleheaders versus The College of Idaho and University of British Columbia, both receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches’ Poll, along with a non-conference doubleheader versus NCAA III Willamette University.
Perennial power Lewis-Clark State College has been voted the top team in the NAIA West Baseball Grouping, as the Warriors earned all the first-place votes en route to collecting 48 points. L-C State, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA preseason poll, was followed by the University of British Columbia (37 points), The College of Idaho (36) and defending NAIA West champs Menlo (32) to round out the upper half of the preseason poll.
The NAIA West is comprised of four Cascade Collegiate Conference programs, two from the Cal Pac Conference, one NAIA independent, and one member of the Frontier Conference. Opening day for NAIA West games is March 1st.
The top five teams, excluding L-C State, will advance to the NAIA West postseason tournament at Concordia University's Hilken Community Stadium on May 1-3 to determine the grouping's automatic bid to the NAIA Championships. Lewis-Clark State will not participate in NAIA West post season tournament since it has an automatic bid to the NAIA World Series as tournament host.
