Owls Knock Off No. 5 Concordia-Irvine to Open Season, Blanks UBC and Falls to WJU in Extra Innings

REDDING, Calif. – Owl freshman Alyssa Davis blasted a 3-run homerun in the top of the 7th inning, as No. 9 Oregon Tech opened up the 2013 campaign with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over No. 5 Concordia University-Irvine this morning in a battle of top-10 teams to open up the Simpson University Invitational in Redding.Tech would shutout University of British Columbia, 5-0, and fall to William Jessup University in extra innings in today’s final contest.
Rylee Carleton, in a relief effort, picked up the win for the Owls in game 1. Taylor Schmidt went the first five innings allowing just four hits and two runs – one earned. Schmidt struck out three. Danielle Sayres and Alyssa Davis recorded Tech’s four hits in the game – two each. The big blow, and only extra base hit, coming off the bat of Davis, a 3-run shot in the 7th inning that proved the game winner.
With Concordia up 2-0 the Owls came to bat in the last inning. With one out Kaitlyn Anderson walked, while Sayres followed with her second single of the game. LeAnn Valenta, running for Anderson, scored on a CU error by the third baseman, off the bat of Shauna Collins, to make it 2-1 CU. Davis then followed with a three-run blast to put Tech up 4-2. The Owls’ Carleton faced three batters in the last inning to secure the win.
In game 2 Rylee Carleton moved to 2-0 in the circle, as the sophomore pitched a complete-game five hit shutout to help move the Owls past University of British Columbia by a 5-0 score. The Owls tallied five hits with Jess Plummer recording a pair of singles and a RBI. Shauna Collins added a double and drove in two runs with Taylor Schmidt driving in Tech’s final two runs on a fifth inning single.
In game 2 Plummer singled in Alyssa Davis after Davis reached on a walk and then stole second base. The single run in the opening inning was all the run support the Owls would need. Back-to-back walks for Tech in the second inning turned into a 3-0 lead after Shauna Collins doubled. It was Tech’s only extra base hit in the game. The Owls capped their scoring in the fifth inning after a Taylor Schmidt two out single scored Davis and Plummer.
UBC made it interesting after loading the bases in the final inning with just one out. Carleton, however, coaxed back-to-back ground outs to end the game.
In today’s final game of the Simpson University Tournament, Tech would eventually take their first loss of the season as the Owls lost to William Jessup University, 7-5, in a nine inning game. Oregon Tech held a 4-2 lead in the last inning only to see WJU tie it up and hold off the Owls to win 7-5 in the nine inning affair.
Leading by two runs in the game’s final inning, the Owls committed four errors leading to a pair of unearned runs that allowed the Warriors to tie the game in regulation. Both teams pushed across single runs in the eighth inning, while WJU scored twice in the ninth and held off Oregon Tech in their bottom half, as Tech fell 7-5.
After earning wins in games one and two, Rylee Carleton fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss. Sarah Coates recorded three hits in the game with Alyssa Davis continuing her hot start with a pair of hits in the finale for the Owls.

Oregon Tech heads into day 2 of the Simpson University Tournament with a 2-1 mark and will face Vanguard, Arizona Christian and Menlo College in Saturday’s triple header.
