Lady Owls Drop Overtime Thriller to Red Hawks
11.10.2012
ROCKLIN, Calif. — Simpson University scored nine of the last 11 points and claimed a 62-61 come-from-behind overtime victory against Oregon Tech at the William Jessup University women's basketball tournament Saturday.
The loss left the Hustlin' Owls 2-2 on the season.
Tech led by as many as 11 points early in the second half, but 29.7-percent shooting from the floor, including a 3-of-18 performance from three-point range, helped doom the Hustlin' Owls. A season high 17 turnovers also hurt.
Still, Tech held a 59-53 lead in overtime when Maria Ramirez made a free throw with two minutes left in the game.
Kaila Smith's free throw had given the Red Hawks a 53-52 lead to start the overtime session, but Nicole Aboumrad hit a jump shot and Karissa Dixon nailed a three-point goal as Tech took a 57-53 lead with three minutes, 16 seconds left in overtime.
All of OIT's points from then on were free throws in a game that featured seven ties and 10 lead changes.
Aboumrad, playing on a WJU floor where she spent the first two years of her college career before transferring to OIT, had a game-high 13 points. Dixon and Kassi Conditt both had double-digit efforts for the Hustlin' Owls, and Colleen Hunt also scored in double figures.
Dixon had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Conditt had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
For Simpson, which upped its record to 1-2 with a rare victory against OIT, had two double-double performances, from Smith and Ariassa Wilson.
The two teams will meet once more this season and play at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, in Southern Oregon's Flagship Inn Classic.
