Owls Open Track & Field Season at Sunshine Indoor Open / Davis Stampede

02.04.2013

CALIFORNIA - Oregon Tech athletes traveled to Westmont College on Saturday and to UC Davis Sunday, as the Owls opened the 2013 track and field campaign in California over the weekend.  11 athletes competed at the Sunshine Indoor Open on Saturday in a meet involving 363 entrants in 38 events from seven schools and several track organizations, while four Owls competed on Sunday’s Davis Stampede ½ marathon.

On Saturday Tech’s Keith Lester Jumped 14.05 in the triple jump, giving him a B qualifier for the National meet at the end of the month.  Lester’s distance of 46-1.25 is the second farthest jump in Oregon Tech school history.

For the women, freshman Shanelle Cayetano jumped 3.20 (10-6) in the pole vault ranking her No.2 in the Oregon Tech record book for that event.

Tech’s distance runners met for the first time of the season on Sunday at the Davis Stampede where a handful of Owls competed in the ½ marathon.

Kirby Garlitz, Scott Minor, and Paul Adams each broke the previous Oregon Tech school-record in the ½ marathon event by more than a minute, as the trio went 1-3 in the race with 942 athletes competing in the event on Sunday.  Tech’s previous best in the event was held by Arnie Carey (1:13.14) set in 1997.

Sunday, Minor timed in at 1:12:05.46, with Adams crossing in 1:12:05.71 and Garlitz finishing the race in 1:12:06.09.  All three exceeded the auto qualifying mark of 1:13.00 for the outdoor nationals in May.
