Owls Down Beavers
02.08.2013
PASADENA, CA -- In the first ever meeting between the two schools, the Oregon Tech baseball team posted a 22-3 win over Caltech on Friday afternoon.
The Owls put together three big offensive innings in posting the win.
Oregon Tech's offense jumped out of the gates with a seven-run first inning. The big blow in that inning came when Tyler Conklin hit bases clearing double. The game settled into a good flow as Caltech starter Jerome Skelly held down the Owls offense over the next three innings.
Caltech got on the board when Brian Penserini sent a line drive over the right fielder outstretched glove. Penserini cruised around the bases for his third career home run.
The Owls offense put a five-run inning together in the fifth with a Tyson Dahl two-run double being a major blow. Caltech plated two runs in their half of the seventh inning when Albie Lavin hit a single up the middle that scored Ryan Casey and Blaine Matulevich.
The visitors put the game out of reach with a nine-run eighth inning. Oregon Tech sent 13 batters to plate as Ethan Schlecht, Spencer Reed and Bryce McKinney each had two RBI's in the inning. A sacrifice fly in the ninth inning rounded out the Owls scoring.
Darian Benanua earned the win on the mound by going five innings and striking out five. Conklin had a 3-for-6 effort at the DH spot with four RBI's and two runs scored to help pace the Owls offense.
Lavin had a 2-for-4 day with two RBI's for Caltech.
Oregon Tech will travel to Hayward, California for three game series with CSU East Bay on Saturday and Sunday.
