EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Oregon Tech senior Joel Matchett came within inches of placing at the NAIA national track and field championships Saturday at Ralph Korte Stadium. Matchett went 46 feet, 3½ inches in the men’s triple jump and finished ninth Saturday at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. John Emtmann of North Dakota’s Dickinson State placed eighth to get the final position on the award’s podium. Entmann’s best jump of 46-6¾ just ousted Matchett on the final day of this year’s national meet. Matchett was less than eight inches from gaining All-American honors in his final collegiate track and field meet. He has one season left with the Hustlin’ Owls’ men’s basketball team.
The only other OIT athlete to compete Saturday was Brianne Kenyon in the women’s shot put. Kenyon’s best throw of 41-4½ left her in 22nd place. OIT’s only two points at the national meet this year came in the women’s javelin, where Sarah Schelb placed seventh.
