KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Zach Anderson hit a short turnaround jumper off an offensive rebound with three seconds to play in overtime, while a David Clarke running 35 footer came up just shy as the buzzer sounded and Oregon Tech fell to No. 2 Eastern Oregon University, 75-73, in Cascade Conference men’s basketball action tonight at Danny Miles Court. Oregon Tech started quickly and ran out to a 12-2 lead just three minutes into the contest. A Josh Johnson 3-pointer at the 9:28 mark gave the Owls a 13 point cushion, their largest of the game, 23-10.
Still holding a double digit lead with 4:15 remaining in period 1, EOU crept back in, using a 12-3 run to close out the half, as Oregon Tech held a 37-36 lead at intermission.
In the second half EOU would tie the game at 40-40, while a Jason Mumm field goal a few minutes later gave the visitors their first lead of the night, 47-46. The Owls would regain the lead after a Josh Johnson trey and hold the lead until Anthony Brown put the Mountaineers back on top, 57-56, with a 3-pointer with 8:14 on the clock.
The teams would trade baskets with neither leading by more than two points for the remainder of regulation. Tied 65-65, the Owls held for last possession. Brandon Bautista would drive to the rim with under five seconds to play, but his shot would roll off and a desperation tip just missed as EOU called timeout off a rebound with .7 seconds. EOU was unable to get a shot off when time expired as the teams went to overtime.
Back-to-back Kyle Waits free throws and a David Clarke 3-pointer lifted the Owls to a five point advantage in the extra period, 72-67, with three minutes to play.
EOU would score six-straight points, while Tech’s Josh Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie it at 73-73 with under a minute remaining with an offensive rebound off the Johnson missed freebie giving the Owls possession. Tech, however, came up empty with EOU retaining possession with 24 seconds on the clock.
EOU’s Anthony Brown next missed from long range as time was winding down, but Zach Anderson was able to corral the ball and his short jumper with 3 seconds left gave EOU the 75-73 lead.
Oregon Tech’s Bautista quickly inbounded the ball to Clarke, but his 35 foot runner hit front iron as time expired to end the game by the same 75-73 final.
Josh Johnson tallied a game-high, along with career-high, 28 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Hustlin’ Owls. David Clarke added 14 points, while Jordan Kiely, Brandon Bautista and Alex Zerbach combined for 16 points in the loss for Tech. Buatista would add 7 assists and Johnson 3.
Jason Mumm led the Mountaineers with a team-high 22 points, while both Anthony Brown and Zach Anderson finished with 12 each. Brown grabbed 9 boards for EOU and JD Esters handed out 8 assists in the win.
