Oregon Tech Sinks Simpson

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Oregon Tech volleyball team opened up their home schedule by
defeating Simpson University 3-1, (25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 26-24) tonight
at Danny Miles Court. The Owls will take a 3-5 overall
record to the UC-Merced Tournament this Friday and Saturday for four
matches before Cascade Conference action begins September 6th.
The Owls trailed 7-8 in the opening set but a 5-0 run pushed Tech to a 12-8 lead they never relinquished. A pair of Kylie Kitzmiller kills during the stretch, along with a Marlee Smith ace and two Simpson hitting errors, would give the Owls all the momentum they needed on the way to a 25-18 win in set 1.
Simpson jumped out to a 3-0 advantage, eventually leading 14-9, before the Owls came alive. Tech would record seven of the next eight points to move up 16-15 in set 2. Alexa Burdett notched two kills with Madisen Garlie and Joelle Swanson adding kills during the run. Simpson would come back to tie the set on four occasions, the last at 19-19, before the Owls moved on for a 25-23 win on a Garlie spike to end the set.
After a break prior to set 3, SU used a 3-0 run to start the contest and never looked back. The Owls tied the set at 7-7, but the Redhawks soon found themselves in a 23-14 lead eventually making it 2-1 after winning the set 25-18.
Trailing 1-5 in set 4, three Garlie kills, with the help of two SU mishaps, and an ace from Tech’s Jennifer Larkin, pushed the Owls to a 9-8 advantage. Simpson regained a 10-9 lead but four-straight points for the Owls, including two kills from Smith and one by Mykala Rubey, gave the home team a 13-10 lead. The Owls continued to hold on to a lead, 21-17, but a 5-0 run by the visitors pushed SU ahead 22-21. The Owls regained a 23-22 lead only to see the Redhawks tie the set at 24-24. Marlee Smith next recorded a kill and an ace to give the Owls a 26-24 win in the set and move the Owls to a 3-5 record.
Garlie would lead the Owl offense with 11 kills, followed by Smith with 10. Megan Holland finished with 26 assists with Kayleigh Whelchel adding 18. Marie Baumann totaled a match-high 29 digs with Smith coming up with 12 digs in the win for the Owls.
Audrey Green recorded a match-high 20 kills for Simpson followed by 11 kills from Jamie Pickett. Kelly Tycksen finished with 40 assists and Jazmin Wallace 23 digs in the loss for SU.
