Oregon Tech Earns Split at UC-Merced Tournament

MERCED, Calif. – Oregon Tech closed out day 2 of the UC-Merced Tournament with a split,
as the Owls move to 6-6 overall heading into conference play next week.
Oregon Tech fell in game 1 to Cal State San Marcos 3-1, (25-20, 25-27,
25-20, 25-17) and managed the split with a sweep over West Coast Baptist
3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-17).
The Owls had no answer for CSSM outside hitter Taylor DeGraff, as the junior NAIA All-American recorded 29 kills and 22 digs in the four set win for the Cougars. Marlee Smith and Kelsey Sampson kept pace as the duo combined for 33 kills and 39 digs in the loss for Tech. Kayleigh Whelchel led Tech with 21 assists followed by Megan Holland with 14. The setters would combine for 23 digs with Marie Baumann adding 20 digs in the opening match.
The Owls bounced back in match 2 with a sweep as Tech sits at 6-6 on the season heading into Cascade Conference action this coming weekend. Junior outside hitter Renee Baumann paced the Owls’ offense with a match-high 13 kills to go with 10 digs, while Mykala Rubey added six kills in the win for Tech. Victoria Porter netted 20 assists with Jennifer Lakin coming up with nine digs.
Oregon Tech faces CCC foes Northwest Christian and Corban University on the road September 6th and 7th before returning home to take on rival Southern Oregon University on Friday, September 13th.
