Student Awards

2014 Student Commencement Speaker!


Graduating Students submit a letter application to apply to speak at Commencement on Saturday, June 14, 2014.  The President will select one student from each college to speak during the ceremony.  Please submit your application letter to the Student Affairs office by Tuesday, April 29.  They can be hand-delivered or e-mailed to nellie.stewart@oit.edu.

The letter should contain the following information:

 1.  A brief biography, including such information as your major, GPA, academic accomplishments, campus and/or community involvement, plans after graduation, career goals, etc.

2.  A brief explanation of why you feel you should be selected as the student speaker.

3.  A summary or outline of what you would plan to say during your speech.

A graduating student for 2014 Commencement is any student who has completed or will be completing Bachelor of Science degree requirements in fall term 2013, winter term 2014, spring term 2014 or summer session 2014.

Submit a Student Award Nomination!

Oregon Tech students deserve recognition for their achievements, dedication and service.

Any Faculty, Administrator, Staff, or Student may submit student award nominations. You may nominate multiples students for the same award or one student for several, and a student may nominate him or herself.

How to Nominate a Student

  1. Meet with the student to inform him/her of your desire to complete a Student Award Nomination.
  2. Write a letter of nomination. Indicate the student’s name and for which Student Award. Clearly state how the student meets the student award criteria. Criteria for each award are available to the right. Nomination is only considered for that specific award and not for others; however, you may nominate a student for more than one award with a separate nomination letter. Submit nomination letter by 5:00 pm on April 15, 2014 to Student Affairs: CU 217 or nellie.stewart@oit.edu.
  3. Encourage the student to receive 1-3 letters of recommendation in support of the nomination from other faculty members, advisor, administrators, students, etc. Submit recommendation letters by 5:00 pm on April 15, 2014 to Student Affairs: CU 217 or nellie.stewart@oit.edu.
  4. Direct the student to complete the Student Biography. This form is a Word document that can be submitted electronically or hard copy. Submit student biography by 5:00 pm on April 15, 2014 to Student Affairs: CU 217 or nellie.stewart@oit.edu.

Guidelines

Letter of Nomination

Indicate the student’s name and for which student award you are nominating the person for. Clearly state how the student meets the student award criteria and why you are nominating the person you are writing about. Criteria for each award are available to the right. Include a paragraph or sentence explaining how you know the person you are writing about and the nature of your relationship with them. Also include an evaluation of the student’s skills and accomplishments.

Indicate the student’s name and for which student award you are in support of recommending the person for. Clearly state how the student meets the student award criteria and why you are nominating the person you are writing about. Criteria for each award are available to the right. Include a paragraph or sentence explaining how you know the person you are writing about and the nature of your relationship with them. Also include an evaluation of the student’s skills and accomplishments.

Deadline

Nomination Letter, Recommendation Letters and Student Biography must be submitted by 5:00 pm, Tuesday, April 15, 2014. The Student Awards Commission will only consider a complete packet; late or incomplete entries will not be accepted.

Nomination Review

The Student Awards Commission will meet in closed sessions to review the merits of each candidate. If nominate a student for the Hiram M. Hunt Science Award or Student Achievement Award, please inform him/her of the possibility of being asked to present to the Student Awards Commission.

Recognition

The awards will be presented at the Student & Alumni Awards dinner on Friday, June 13, 2014. All student nominees and award recipients are invited to this event. If the student you nominated is an award recipient, you (or someone from your department) will be asked to briefly introduce the student to accept the award.
