Follow-up on your part after the interview will give you an advantage over many other candidates.

Send a Thank You Note

In addition to thanking your interviewers for taking the time to speak with you, a thank you note can be used to clarify answers to questions that you feel you did not answer well or completely, to re-state your qualifications (and mention those that didn't come up in the interview), and re-affirm your interest in the position. Most hiring managers pay very close attention to how well (and how rapidly) you write a thank-you note. Email is quicker and generally preferred unless you interview somewhere very traditional.

Sample Emailed Thank You Note

Hello [interviewer name],

Thank you so much for meeting with me today. It was such a pleasure to learn more about the team and position, and I’m very excited about the opportunity to join [company name] and help [bring in new clients / develop new systems / anything else awesome you would be doing] with your team.

I look forward to hearing from you about the next steps in the hiring process, and please do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide additional information.

Pro Tips

If you really want to blow a hiring manager out of the water, add in another few lines before “I look forward to...” with some ideas you have on how you could add value. Think: a quick idea in response to something you discussed in the interview, or some possible partners if you’re in business development or sales.

If you did not answer a question well or completely during your interview, you may also elaborate on your response in your thank you note: “When we discussed my ability to work well in teams, I neglected to mention that I also led the International Club on campus, a very diverse group of students. We worked together to run two very successful fundraisers, raising over $2,000, and my focus was to make sure everyone had fun and contributed based on their strengths.” Adapted from TheMuse.com
