What is a Safe Zone?
The purpose of Safe Zone is to create a safe environment for ALL members of the Oregon Tech community, regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnicity, gender expression, socio-economic, age or ability. Safe Zone workshops are open to all staff, faculty and students who wish to model support, acceptance and inclusion of all people. Participants volunteer to be visible allies, receive training, and learn to be an effective resource for the Oregon Tech community.
Why do we need Safe Zone training?
Faculty, staff, and student allies are trained and committed to creating spaces where all people are safe to be who they are, ask the questions and be welcomed and affirmed. Whether it is by being someone who provides support for things that are typical of most young adults, specific concerns, or more intentional support allies provide a critical role in forming a culture that truly challenges and nurtures all.
If you would like to become a Safe Zone, or learn more about how you can support the program, please contact Janette Stringer at janette.stringer@oit.edu or 541.885.1827.
Who & Where are the Oregon Tech Safe Zones
Many place a Safe Zone placard on their door, window or wall, to show that they have made a commitment to being a Safe Zone. However, this is an individual choice of those who have completed the training, and choosing to display the placard does not necessarily imply anything about their level of support.
If you find that one of the people on this list does not have a placard displayed or is not wearing a button, please understand that they can offer you information and resources, but will likely refer you to another person.
