Basic Student Health Insurance Plan

Oregon Tech students who register and take 6 or more ON-CAMPUS credit hours for Fall, Winter, or Spring terms are automatically enrolled in the Basic Student Health Insurance Plan. The cost of $92.00 is automatically included in your bill for tuition and fees. Regardless of other insurance, students may not waive this charge or coverage. This health insurance plan provides very basic coverage ($5,000 per Accident or Illness per Policy Year), and may be used to assist with the co-pays and deductibles of other major medical plans. If you have other insurance, the Oregon Tech Basic Student Health Insurance Plan will be billed as your primary insurance for the first $250 of your medical bill. Rules may vary depending on individual's other insurance carrier. Included in the basic benefits are partial payments for hospitalization, physician's home and office visits, ambulance service, x-ray and laboratory work, surgery and pregnancy expenses. Listed below are the dates you are covered by the Basic Plan per school term.

Q: What kind of health insurance is this?

A:

The Basic Plan is an Accident and Sickness plan which gives OIT students up to $5,000 of medical benefits per condition, per school year. If you see an Aetna provider, there is a $20 copay for doctor, counseling, women's annual exams, labwork, physical therapy, and chiropractic visits. Please review the OIT Health Insurance Brochure by visiting www.aetnastudenthealth.com and find your school.

Q: How do I find a participating medical provider near where I live?

A:

Aetna is a nationwide network. To find an Aetna provider in any location in the U.S., simply go to: www.aetna.com/docfind/custom/studenthealth to enter DocFind search.

Q: What if I have not received my Aetna Medical ID card but I need to see a doctor?

A:

All students enrolled in the Basic Plan will receive a Medical ID card 6 - 8 weeks from the beginning of the term. If you need an insurance card before you receive it in the mail, please stop by the Student Health Center. Cindy Childers, your student insurance representative on campus, will issue you a temporary insurance card. Please keep your insurance card with you at all times and show it to the doctor or hospital when you seek medical treatment. As long as you continue to take 6 or more on-campus credits per term, and voluntarily pay for the Summer 2009 coverage, your card will be valid during the entire policy year (9/1/11 - 9/1/12). You will not receive a new card each term.

Q: Are prescriptions covered and if so, how do I get prescriptions if I have not received my ID card yet?

A:

Prescriptions are only covered by the Supplemental Plan.  If you have purchased the Supplemental Plan, but have not received your medical ID card, you may purchase your prescription in full and submit a Aetna Pharmaceutical Claim Form along with your receipt for reimbursement.

Q: I already have health insurance through my parents or through work. Can I use this insurance still?

A:

If you already have other health insurance, this insurance plan will help off-set out-of-pocket costs. Simply show your doctor both medical insurance cards and ask them to bill both companies.

Q: How do I get coverage for Summer term?

A:

Contact the Integrated Student Health Center to voluntarily purchase summer coverage. Summer is not automatic.

For more information or to get help with a claim, please contact Cindy Childers at 541-885-1807.

Please Note:

  • You do not need your insurance card or any health insurance to be seen at the Oregon Tech Integrated Student Health Center.
  • Summer term is voluntary and the responsibility of the student. Students may purchase the Basic Plan on a voluntary basis as long as they had the Basic Plan in the Spring Term. To enroll in the Summer Basic Plan, contact the Integrated Student Health Center at 541-885-1800. The optional Supplemental Plan may be purchased for Summer as well, but only if the Basic Plan coverage is purchased.
  • Students who drop below the 6 credit hour limit before the enrollment deadline will have their basic insurance fee refunded.

Using Your Insurance Plan Wisely

Since you pay for health insurance, it is important to use it wisely. As a student at  Oregon Tech, you are encouraged to use the Oregon Tech Integrated Student Health Center as your first stop for medical care (unless it is an emergency). Because the student health fee that you pay covers most services, you usually do not have any additional payments. You will be referred to an off-campus provider if necessary for specialized medical care and certain tests.

If you go off-campus for health care services such as the hospital emergency room, urgent care center, or another clinic, show them your insurance card(s). Ask them if they will submit the bill to your health insurance on your behalf. If not, ask them for an itemized copy of the bill and fill out a Aetna Claim Form.
