Purpose for the Advising Handbook
This advising handbook is designed to help advisors do a combination of the following:
- advise students effectively
- articulate policies and procedures
- define and practice good advising
- find correct, accurate, concise, consistent information
- find referral sources/resources
- provide standardized assistance to students
This handbook is also designed to give Oregon Tech advisors the following:
- descriptions of effective advising processes for different types of students
- resource materials and information to guide further reading related to advising
- specific and current Oregon Tech advising information
- explanations of advisor and advisee responsibilities, roles, and procedures
- philosophies and goals of developmental advising
It is our hope that this advising handbook will serve as a useful reference for advising-related questions and facilitate continuous, ongoing advisor training. It is designed to be both a supporting reference and a training guide. Most of this guide (Advising A – Z) provides quick reference material. Some entries have been provided for advice or guidance. These entries are italicized.
