Geomatics-Geographic Information Systems Option

Mission

The mission of the Geomatics-Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Option, a Bachelor of Science degree program, is to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills in the GIS discipline.  The GIS Option prepares students to become certified GIS professionals.  All students learn the professional responsibility of protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public, and become aware of global and cultural issues related to their discipline.

Program Educational Objectives

Program educational objectives are statements that describe the expected accomplishments of graduates during the first few years after graduation--usually three to five years. These objectives are consistent with the mission of the program and the institution.  The program educational objectives for the GIS Option are to:

  • Prepare graduates to enter into professional practice.
  • Provide students with a broad foundation in the GIS discipline.
  • Prepare students to function effectively on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Prepare graduates to become certified professionals.
     

Expected Student Learning Outcomes

The expected student learning outcomes for the GIS Option are:

  1. Ability to work effectively in teams.
  2. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in solving geospatial problems.
  4. Ability to devise database schema required for addressing geospatial problems.
  5. Ability to develop customized user interfaces appropriate for geospatial investigations.
  6. Ability to appropriately incorporate GPS, CAD, and historical paper-based record data into a GIS framework.
  7. Ability to identify geospatial problems and the requisite method, or set of procedures needed to address the issue.
  8. Ability to construct a clear, presentable cartographic product that addresses a geospatial issue.
  9. Understand the software/hardware requirements for implementing a scalable GIS.
