Patents Research

Lexis Nexis Academic - US Legal - Patents
Contains all patents from US, Europe, as well as Patent abstracts from Japan and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications. Results can be limited to different types of patents.

Google Patents covers the entire collection of granted patents and published patent applications from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the European Patent Office (EPO). USPTO documents date back to 1790, and EPO documents date back to 1978.

United States Patent and Trademark Office is the US agency that examines all US patent applications. PDF copies of patents are available back to 1790.

The European Patent Office offers free and subscription searching of European and Asian patents filed with them. Many are also available translated to English, German or French.

Google Scholar - a general search of scholarly information on Google
