Middle and High School Teachers Lead The Way with Oregon Tech
July 19, 2013, KLAMATH FALLS, ORE. – For the eighth year in a row, more than 60 middle and high school teachers spent two weeks on the Oregon Tech campus to expand their knowledge of Engineering Design and Development along with Automation and Robotics as part of the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program.
To prepare teachers that deliver STEM education and K-12 activity-based learning curriculums, PLTW partners with universities nationwide to provide training and on-going support. Oregon Tech's first step as a PLTW affiliate was establishing a self-sustaining Summer Training Institute for teachers in Oregon. Middle and high school teachers underwent an intensive two-week training program overseen by Oregon Tech professors. This program prepares instructors to teach the specific courses they will be offering in the fall. Ongoing professional development for both teachers and counselors is also an important component of the program.
"The Core Training program prepares teachers to expose their students to cutting-edge technology and the rewarding career opportunities that are available in engineering," says Dr. David Culler, who directs the PLTW programs at Oregon Tech. "This program enables teachers to incorporate engineering concepts and theories in their classes, some of which can eventually count towards college credit.”
Through training middle and high school teachers on foundational courses of engineering, they are able to better prepare their students for today’s high-tech, high-skill global economy. As the only university in Oregon certified to provide training, Oregon Tech collaborates with PLTW to provide and coordinate this yearly program that provides teachers with a professional development certificate and continuing support.
