Grant from Pacific Power Foundation Improves Access for First-Generation Engineers

Aug 23, 2017
Since the first Pacific Power Foundation Scholarship at Oregon Tech was awarded in 2012, a total of eight first generation engineering students have directly benefited from the generosity of the Pacific Power Foundation.

First generation students at Oregon Tech who are interested in engineering are now one step closer to achieving their educational goals, thanks to a $5,000 scholarship-directed grant from the Pacific Power Foundation (PPF). The funds were presented to the Oregon Tech Foundation (OTF) August 8th in support of scholarships to help first-generation undergraduate engineering students manage college costs. The Oregon Tech Foundation awarded more than 235 scholarships totaling more than $515,000 in 2016/17, and this year’s donation from the Pacific Power Foundation is a strong contribution in our efforts to exceed that goal.

Since the first Pacific Power Foundation Scholarship at Oregon Tech was awarded in 2012, a total of eight first generation engineering students have directly benefited from the generosity of the Pacific Power Foundation. Matt Green, an Oregon Tech Renewable Energy Engineering student and a 2016/17 scholarship recipient, reaffirmed the feelings of many recipients when he said “Thank you for providing me this scholarship, and helping to make college more affordable for past recipients, myself, and the future recipients.”

The Pacific Power Foundation was created in 1988 by PacifiCorp, an electric utility serving 1.8 million customers in six Western states, as Pacific Power (in Oregon, Washington and California) and Rocky Mountain Power (in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho). Their mission is to support the growth and vitality of their communities by allocating grants that best serve community interests in the areas they serve. Grants generally range between $2,000 and $5,000. Since its founding, the PPF has awarded more than $58.5 million to nonprofit organizations. In 2016, the Pacific Power Foundation awarded nearly $883,000 to local nonprofit organizations.
